What is a content gap analysis?
Content gap analysis is the process of evaluating existing content on a topic and identifying "gaps" in content that need improvement.
You want to create article content about link building.
Before you start writing, look at the content gaps.
You might discover content currently ranking in Google through content gaps:
Some content is out of date
Lack of cases and details
You can make up for these three content gaps in your own content.
This is what a content gap analysis needs to do.
For example, in the “ Ultimate Guide to SEO ” previously published by Exxon Digital Marketing , through content gap analysis, we found that the introduction of SEO tools was also missing from the content, which has been included in email list our content plan for 2022.

Why is content gap analysis important?
The main reason to look at content gaps is that it can help your content perform better (SEO performance as well as social sharing).
Because before the content is published you already know that your content is better than the content that already ranks.
Here are some strategies to get the most from your content gap analysis.
Analyze Google Home
Most people publish content with the goal of ranking #1 on Google.
The best way to spot content gaps is to look at pages that already rank on the first page of Google.
For example, let's say you want to create a blog post about Paleo Diet Snacks.
You need to open Google and search for this keyword...and check the results given by Google's homepage:
Then carry out the content gap analysis.
Common content gaps include:
Comprehensiveness of content
Does the content give all the details you want?
freshness of content
When was the content published or updated?
Is the page content easy to read and understand?
Did the content impress you to share?
Ideally, you should “fill in” all these gaps with your own content. Even filling one or two content gaps could put you ahead of your competitors in the Google homepage.
Use tools for content gap analysis
Content Gap Analysis with SEMRush
There is a feature in SEMRush that speeds up the process of content gap analysis: finding topics with many content gaps.
Just enter your competitor's website into the tool. Then check out their top-performing keywords:

Check the first page ranking for each keyword one by one.
Sometimes you will find that the first page rankings are pretty solid. The content is reasonable and there are not too many gaps.
But you will also find some homepage results full of holes. You can plug these holes with your own content and create content that is ten times better .
Content Gap Analysis with Ahrefs Tool
With Ahrefs' Content Gap tool it is possible to:
Use the Content Gap Tool to find keywords your competitors are ranking for but not yourself
First, let's take a look at how to use the ahrefs tool to find keywords that your competitors are ranking for but not yourself.
Open the site explorer tool and enter your own URL:
Enter the domain name in site-explorer
Then click "Conten Gap" in the options bar on the left. Enter your competitor's URL in the space above on the left. (You can add up to 10 competitor URLs here), if you don't know who your competitors are, you can find them in the Competing domains report.
(Note, the URL of the other party can be sub-directory, such as moz.com/blog, in this case, the domain on the far right should be set to prefix, and the tool will automatically identify it for you)
勾选 -at least one of the target should rank in top 10
Then click show keywords

At this point, the tool will give you a list of keywords that your competitors have ranked for, but for which your site is not ranking.
You can add topics corresponding to these keywords to your content plan. Or targeted optimization of existing content.
